Did You Know: Your Existing Policies May Not Cover Your RV.

One of the most common mistakes RV owners make is insuring their RV on a standard auto policy or assuming their homeowners policy fills the gap. Neither fully covers your RV. Standard auto policies typically do not include comprehensive coverage for personal belongings inside your motorhome or travel trailer. Standard homeowners policies have strict limitations on off-premises coverage and often require a sizable deductible before coverage applies to items stored away from home.

A dedicated RV insurance policy fills these gaps completely, protecting your vehicle, your belongings, and your liability whether you're on the road or parked at a campsite in Florida.

Coverage Built for the Way You Travel

Whether your RV is used for the occasional overnight trip, an extended journey, or if you're a full-time RVer, it's important to have the proper insurance coverage for your home-on-wheels. FEI & GAC Wealth Management offers RV and motorhome insurance to Florida residents throughout Tampa Bay and statewide.

As an independent agency, we compare rates from GEICO, Progressive, Travelers, Allstate, AAA, and dozens more to find the best policy for your needs. Unlike typical auto policies, our motorhome policies pay for temporary housing or travel expenses to get you home if your motorhome is damaged while you are on the road. We'll even pay to transport your damaged motorhome to your home, repair center, or storage facility.

Florida RV Insurance Requirements

Insurance requirements for RVs in Florida depend on whether your rig is motorized or towed. Here's what Florida law requires — and what we strongly recommend beyond the minimum.

Motorized RVs (Class A, B & C)

Required by Florida Law

Florida law treats motorhomes as motor vehicles. Any motorized RV operated on Florida public roads must carry the following minimum coverage:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) — minimum $10,000: Covers your medical expenses after an accident regardless of fault, as part of Florida's no-fault insurance system.
  • Property Damage Liability (PDL) — minimum $10,000: Covers damage you cause to another person's property in an at-fault accident.

Given the size and potential damage a motorhome can cause, carrying limits well above the state minimum is strongly advisable. These minimums are widely considered inadequate for a serious accident involving a large motorized vehicle.

Travel Trailers & Fifth Wheels

No Separate Policy Required by FL Law

Travel trailers, fifth wheels, and other non-motorized towed RVs are not driven independently. Florida law does not require a separate insurance policy for the trailer itself — liability from the towing vehicle's auto policy extends to the trailer while being towed.

However — the towing vehicle's policy only covers liability to others. It does not cover physical damage to the trailer itself, its contents, or liability when your trailer is parked and being used as a residence. A dedicated RV policy is strongly recommended.

If your travel trailer is financed, your lender will typically require comprehensive and collision coverage regardless of Florida's minimum requirements.

The information above reflects Florida's minimum statutory requirements for RV insurance. Coverage requirements and recommendations may vary based on your specific RV type, usage, and lender requirements. Contact our licensed agents for guidance specific to your situation.

What a Dedicated RV Policy Covers

A specialized RV or motorhome policy provides protections that standard auto and homeowners policies do not. Here's what each coverage type provides in plain language.

Comprehensive & Collision

Comprehensive protects against non-collision losses — theft, vandalism, fire, hurricane and storm damage, hail, and animal impacts. Florida's severe weather makes this especially important. Collision covers damage when your RV collides with another vehicle or object. Required by most lenders for financed RVs.

Vacation & Campsite Liability

A standard auto policy provides liability while driving — but typically not when your RV is parked and used as a temporary residence. This coverage protects you if a guest is injured at your campsite, or if an incident at your parked RV causes damage to a neighboring site. Essential for any Florida RVer who uses their rig as a residence.

Personal Effects Coverage

Covers personal belongings inside your RV — clothing, electronics, kitchenware, outdoor gear, and other items. Standard auto policies do not cover these belongings. Particularly important for full-time RVers or those who travel with valuable equipment.

Emergency Expense Coverage

If your motorhome is damaged while you're on the road and becomes uninhabitable, this coverage pays for temporary housing or travel expenses to get you home. We'll also pay to transport your damaged motorhome to your home, a repair center, or a storage facility.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist

Florida has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country. This coverage protects you if you're hit by a driver who has no insurance or insufficient coverage to pay for your damages or injuries — including while operating your motorhome.

Roadside Assistance

RV breakdowns can be complex and expensive to resolve. Roadside assistance covers towing to the nearest qualified repair facility, jump starts, flat tire service, fuel delivery, and lockout service — available 24/7 wherever Florida's roads take you.

Total Loss Replacement

An optional coverage that pays for the cost of a new replacement RV of the same make and model if yours is totaled and the vehicle is within a qualifying model year — rather than just the depreciated actual cash value. Ask your agent about availability for your specific rig.

All Rigs. All Routes. All of Florida.

Whether you own a luxury Class A diesel pusher or a compact pop-up camper, we'll find the right policy for your rig and the way you use it.

Class A Motorhomes

The largest and most luxurious motorhomes, typically 26 to 45 feet. Built on a commercial bus or truck chassis, these require dedicated insurance and must meet Florida's minimum coverage requirements as a motorized vehicle.

Class B Motorhomes (Campervans)

Built on a standard van chassis, the most compact of the motorhome classes. More maneuverable and fuel-efficient, but still classified as a motorized vehicle under Florida law and must carry the required minimum coverage.

Class C Motorhomes

Built on a truck or van chassis with a distinctive over-cab sleeping area. A popular choice for Florida families. Like Class A and B, they require the state minimum PIP and PDL coverage under Florida law.

Travel Trailers

Towed by a truck or SUV, travel trailers don't require a separate policy under Florida law, but the towing vehicle's coverage won't protect the trailer itself from physical damage or theft. A dedicated policy is strongly recommended.

Fifth-Wheel Trailers

Larger towed trailers that connect via a special hitch in a pickup truck bed. Like travel trailers, they're not required to carry separate insurance in Florida, but dedicated coverage is essential to protect your investment and campsite liability.

Pop-Up Campers & Toy Haulers

Lightweight and easy to tow, pop-up campers and toy haulers are popular with Florida weekend adventurers. While not required to carry separate insurance in Florida, a dedicated policy protects your gear and your campsite liability exposure.

Did You Know?

Neither a homeowner’s policy nor an auto policy will include the coverage you need for your RV. Most auto policies do not include comprehensive coverage for personal belongings and homeowner policies tend to have strict limitations on off-premises coverage, as well as require a sizable deductible to be paid first.
